Gustavus Alaska

Gustavus Alaska

The town of Gustavus is located 48 miles from Alaska's capital city of Juneau. An easy ferry or air taxi ride over, it sits in one of the most beautiful spots in the entire state, Glacier Bay National Park. Native Tlingit tribes once used the area for berry picking, fishing and camps. Homesteaders made their way to the region in 1914, when a group of 3 families came from Juneau and made it their home. It was established as a town in 1925 and many of the residents today are descendents of the original homesteaders. Gustavus was originally known as "Strawberry point", and still has a large beach area with strawberries growing everywhere.

One of the bigger draws for visitors to Gustavus is whale watching. There are both full and half day tours offered by different companies that travel to Point Adolphous, where one can see not only whales, but birds and other marine wildlife. Sport fishing is also a popular diversion, with charters for both salmon and halibut available. Other outdoor adventures include overnight sea kayaking trips, hiking the beach and surrounding areas or biking along one of the many trails. There is a gift shop with historical items and sundries, as well as a golf course. Those wishing to stay a few days will find a nice choice in accommodations from local inns to bed and breakfasts, as well as the Glacier Bay Lodge, the only lodging directly in Glacier Bay National Park.
