Copper Center Alaska

Copper River Princess Wilderness LodgeCopper Center is located on the old Richardson Highway about 200 road miles from Anchorage and 100 miles north of Valdez. The town has a population of just under 400, with the local economy closely linked to highway related tourism. Copper Center is the gateway to America’s largest National Park, Wrangell St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The first white settlements in the area occurred around the turn of the century, but the Ahtna Alaska natives have occupied the Copper River basin for over 5000 years.

Copper Center Hotels
Lodging choices in Copper Center are somewhat limited but include small bed and breakfasts and lodges. We suggest the Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge which opened just a few years ago. The Lodge offer views of Wrangell St. Elias National Park and free shuttles to the National Park Service visitor center. With modern, comfortable rooms and a great restaurant, you are sure to enjoy your stay.

Copper Center Tours and Attractions
Copper Center is located at the confluence of the famous Copper River and Klutina River, offering world class salmon fishing. Exploring the Wrangell St. Elias National Park is popular, including the historic mining towns of McCarthy and Kennicott. Additional activities from available from the Copper River Princess Lodge include ATV trail rides, rafting, flightseeing and hiking. Valdez offers additional choices such as kayaking and Columbia Glacier cruises.

Cooper Center Transportation
Most people reach Copper Center by road from Anchorage, which can be done easily by rental car in about 5 hours. Others will ferry their car to Valdez or drive down the Richardson Highway from Fairbanks or the Alaska Highway. Air taxi service from Anchorage is also possible.
