Girdwood Alaska

Alyeska Resort GirdwoodGirdwood in located on the scenic Turnagain Arm about 35 miles southwest of Anchorage. Girdwood has evolved from a gold mining town to a true year-round resort community. The town is bordered on three sides by Chugach State Park and Chugach National Forest, and is home to the Alyeska Ski Resort – the largest ski area in Alaska. About 2,000 residents live in Girdwood.

Girdwood Hotels
Girdwood features a large selection of bed and breakfasts, as well as the fabulous The Hotel Alyeska. Within this year-round resort you will find 307 deluxe rooms, a pool, whirlpool, full fitness center, shopping, and award-winning cuisine.

Girdwood Tours and Attractions
Of course Girdwood is known for world class skiing in the winter. Alyeska operates a mountain tramway throughout the year, as well as a number of hi-speed quads and other lifts in the winter. In addition to downhill skiing you can enjoy Nordic skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, heli skiing and snowshoeing. There is a lot to do in the summer as well. Ride the tram, take a hike, go fishing or take an exciting raft trip. You will find some great shops and restaurants in Girdwood, be sure to stop by the bake shop for enormous cinnamon roll.

Girdwood Transportation
Girdwood is located on the Seward Highway, an easy 50 minute drive from Anchorage. It is a great stop as you head to or from Seward, Homer or other Kenai Peninsula destinations. The Alaska Railroad offers service to Girdwood, and the Park Connection bus service can drop you off at the Girdwood “Y”. There is a small airport in Girdwood, but no scheduled service.
