Mendenhall Glacier and Gardens Tour 12:00pm
Step easily into nature by combining a visit to Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure and the Mendenhall Glacier. This fully narrated tour begins with a drive past downtown Juneau in route to the Rainforest Gardens. Upon arrival, you are met by a staff member who will escort you through the colorful lower garden that includes amazingly designed landscapes and a cascading stream. Hear about how the local owners came to develop the area and the history behind their notorious upside down trees. Next, join your forest guide aboard a covered shuttle for a mile-long, narrated journey into the heart of the rainforest. Long daylight hours make for stunning forest displays as you wind your way to an elevation of 580 feet. From this bird's eye view, you can walk along the deck to soak in breathtaking views of the Mendenhall Valley, Chilkat Mountains and Gastineau Channel. Enjoy a brief stop in the greenhouse at the bottom of the mountain before traveling to your next venue, the Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau's star attraction. This massive river of compressed blue ice is the largest, most rugged glacier accessible by road. Take a few minutes to walk along the trails, stop at the photo look out or enjoy the short movie in the visitors center about the glacier. US Forest Service staff is available throughout the visitor center complex to answer your questions.
Please read this note if you will be taking this tour as a cruise ship shore excursion. Booking an independent shore excursion such as this tour has many benefits. These trips are typically less expensive than cruise line options, are operated by reputable Alaskan owned suppliers, and often are significantly less crowded. However, they are best suited for independent guests, and most trips require a short walk to a central departure point. If you have mobility limitations, or would just prefer to board your tour dockside, please consider purchasing a tour on board from the cruise line. Also note that many tours operate at different times on different days of the week to accommodate cruise line schedules. See the links below, or contact us and we can get you booked on the departure best suited for your cruise itinerary.
