Juneau Alaska

Located in Southeast Alaska, Juneau is best known as the state’s capital. Its location and function as a political center give Juneau the ability to offer big-city amenities with a rustic flair. While the population is just over 30,000, the amount of land within the city limits makes Juneau the largest city in America. Surrounded by mountains, wooded valleys, ocean and massive glaciers, Juneau is often referred to as America’s most beautiful capital city.

Juneau Hotels
As the capital, Juneau welcomes more politicians and dignitaries than any other Alaskan city and demands an impressive array of lodging options. Campgrounds on the edge of Mendenhall Lake, situated at the base of Mendenhall Glacier, offer a unique experience. Juneau Tours and Attractions
The paths that twist and turn throughout the city have earned Juneau the nickname Little San Francisco, giving visitors and locals a hike for all abilities. In addition to the capital complex, art galleries, boutiques, souvenir shops and the Alaska State Museum contribute to Juneau’s atmosphere. Don’t miss a visit to the totem pole at the capital building – it’s five stories tall! Juneau’s location makes a great starting point for backcountry trips. Just 13 miles outside of town lay the impressive Mendenhall Glacier. Its accessibility allows motorists to drive right up to the face of the massive wall of ice. Another way to view Juneau’s glaciers is by the many plane and helicopter tours offered. A visit to the ruins of the Alaska-Juneau gold mine or the local salmon hatchery make for educational tours. For a look at Alaska’s salt marshes and the migratory waterfowl protected there, visit the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge.

Juneau Transportation
While there are no roads linking the city to the rest of Alaska, Juneau is a major port of call for all cruise lines sailing the Inside Passage. It is also a stop on the route of the Alaska State Ferry. Several charters offer boat tours out of Juneau, ranging from several hours to several days.
