A
visit to the Last Frontier would not be complete without experiencing Denali
National Park. Featuring North America's tallest mountain, Mount McKinley,
Denali National Park is one of the most-visited National Parks in the state. Surrounding
Denali Park is the Alaska Range, which includes countless other spectacular
mountains and many large glaciers. Denali's more than six million acres encompasses
a complete sub-arctic eco-system, home to large mammals such as grizzly bears,
wolves, Dall sheep, caribou and moose. Located along Alaska Route 3, the George
Parks Highway, the entrance to Denali National Park lies approximately 240 miles
north of Anchorage and 125 miles south of Fairbanks.
Transportation
Denali National Park is accessible by car
or via the Alaska Railroad from either
Anchorage or Fairbanks. Another great option is the Park
Connection Motorcoach with daily summer service from Seward, Talkeetna and
morning or afternoon departures from Anchorage. See our Denali
Park Transportation page for a complete list of options. The Denali Park
Road is 90 miles long and accessible by private vehicle for only the first 14
miles to the Savage River Bridge. To travel to destinations farther into the
park, including the Eielson Visitor Center, shuttle and tour bus services are
available.
Lodging
Due to its location in the Interior of the state and the time required to truly
explore the park, we recommend a two or three night stay in Denali National
Park. The majority of lodging options are located close to the Park entrance.
Here, we recommend the Denali
Bluffs Hotel and the Denali
Princess Wilderness Lodge. If a unique
wilderness opportunity is what you prefer, a stay at one of our remote backcountry
lodges is sure to fulfill all of your expectations. We offer the Kantishna Roadhouse, located 90 miles within the park and accessible via private
motorcoach.
Activities
Denali National Park offers a wide variety of exciting ways to explore its unique
environment. Bus tours include the 12-hour Kantishna
Wilderness Trails Tour, which encompasses the full 90 miles of the Denali
Park road and includes a stop at the historic mining town of Kantishna. Also
available is the popular eight-hour Tundra
Wildlife Tour, which covers the first 50 miles of the park road. Other trips
offered near the Park entrance include helicopter
flightseeing, whitewater and scenic rafting,
husky kennel tours, horseback
riding and dinner theaters.
See our Denali Park Tours page for a complete list of options. Be sure to stop
by the visitor center during your stay. There are also a wide variety of ranger-naturalist
programs offered throughout the summer, as well as some great day hikes near
the park entrance area.
For more information on Denali National Park we suggest you visit the National Park Service web site for Denali National Park.
