Alaska Railroad Aurora Train Anchorage to Denali
Leave Alaska’s largest city on a winter train headed to the snowy wilds of Denali National Park.
It's a scenic 234 rail miles from Anchorage to Denali Park. After boarding at the downtown Anchorage Depot and settling into comfortable seats, on clear winter morning passengers enjoy their first view of Denali just 30 minutes into the trip. More views arise as the train passes through Wasilla and among the long shadows of spruce trees and birch in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.
Past the long shadows of spruce trees and birch.
It's a pleasure to walk the train on this trip, stopping into the Wilderness Café car for a cup of coffee or bite to eat. Alaska Railroad cars are lined with windows that let you catch glimpses of the passing scenery throughout. The route draws within 40 miles of the summit of Denali after passing through Talkeetna. Then, after reaching windswept Broad Pass, the train winds through a frosty plateau before pulling into the quiet Denali Depot.
The Alaska Railroad only offers Adventure Class on the Aurora Winter Train. Passengers enjoy spacious cars with tall windows and large forward-facing seats and the ability to easily walk between different cars on the train. Although there is no dining car on the Aurora Winter Train, hearty hot and cold food, drinks, and adult beverages are available for purchase onboard in the Wilderness Café.
Bring a government issued photo ID for checking in and a credit or debit card for additional onboard purchases (cash not accepted). Don't forget a camera. It is also a good idea to keep your coat with you while on board.
Check in at the depot with a valid government issued photo ID one hour prior to departure. Boarding passes with seat assignments will be issued then. All passengers are assigned seats by the Alaska Railroad upon check in at the depot. The Alaska Railroad offers checked baggage service. Passengers are allowed two checked bags plus one carry on, with dimension and weight restrictions like those of airlines. The Alaska Railroad charges $20 per item for oversized or excess baggage.
