"Wonderful trip! We saw lots of wildlife and the bus driver was very knowledgeable about the park, its history, plants, and animals."

Not to be confused with bus tours on the Denali National Park Road, this distinctive trip takes a different route on a remote gravel road known as the Denali Highway. The day starts with a convenient hotel pickup in the Denali entrance area before heading out into the wilds along the eastern Alaska Range. The landscapes are as vivid and varied as anything seen within the borders of nearby Denali Park. Glaciated peaks soar thousands of feet high on the horizon, braided rivers wind through vast tundra, and wildlife dots the scenery. Your driver-guide provides narration throughout the morning, and several photo stops give you a chance to see the scenery up close.
Landscapes are as vivid and varied as any in Alaska.
After about 65 miles on the highway you'll reach Alpine Creek Lodge, the tour turnaround point. Luckily it's not just a quick stop at this rustic roadhouse. Here you'll enjoy lunch along with your choice of afternoon activities. Head out to Alpine Creek to try your hand a gold planning. Climb in the hills behind the lodge on a guided hike. Take a sled dog kennel tour. There's much to do and see in this remote corner of Alaska.
The full day tour concludes with a return trip on the Denali Highway. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife on the way back. The conditions change rapidly throughout the day, and the local wildlife is always on the move.
The Denali Highway Backcountry Adventure is a fully-narrated bus tour with a certified naturalist guide/driver. Seating aboard the comfortably modified school bus with large sliding windows is first-come, first-served. Lunch includes a sandwich, soup, and salad that is pre-ordered as you board the bus.
Lunch, snacks, and water are provided, but passengers should bring any additional food they'd like. Bring all gear necessary to comfortably enjoy the Alaskan outdoors, including a rain jacket, warm layers, and insect repellant. Don't forget a camera and binoculars.
Alaska State Law requires children under age 8 and below 65 pounds to be in a car seat on the bus. A paid ticket is required for all children and infants.
The Denali Highway Backcountry Adventure tour picks up from many Denali park area hotels when requested in advance.
