- Kachemak Bay Kayaking from Homer
Overview
Travelers to Homer are treated to quintessential coastal Alaska scenery on this seven-hour guided kayak trip. The tour starts on the Homer Spit, a natural land formation home to the town's busy harbor. Here, the tour boards a water taxi for a beautiful half-hour ride across Kachemak Bay to Otter Cove Resort.
Quintessential coastal Alaska scenery.
A tour guide greets guests as they pull up to the dock at Otter Cove. The setting is classic: A slim and craggy rock shore quickly gives way to dense Sitka spruce forest, the foliage huge from plentiful water and a mild climate. Amongst this scenery, the guide briefly goes over kayak operation and safety before fitting everyone in the group with lifejackets and spray skirts. After slipping into tandem sea kayaks, it's off into the water of Kachemak Bay.
Following along at a casual paddling pace, the group makes a leisurely circuit along the mouths of Sadie and Tutka Coves and around Yukon Island. The deep marine water and tidal lagoons provide a thriving habitat for all manner of animals. Out in the deeper marine waters, the guide points out black and white murrelets and sea otters, black-capped male eiders and curious seals. In the protected shallows, the group spots intertidal creatures. Colorful sea stars and anemones cling to the rocks just below the surface of the clear water. The group stops for a long lunch break on a beach partway through. The trip concludes with a return water taxi to Homer.
