Alaska Train Reservations
The Alaska Railroad operates a number of different trains, and most offer visitors different onboard service options.
The flagship route for the railroad is called the Denali Star, which operates one train daily in each direction between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The train departs each city at 8:15am and stops along the way in Talkeetna and Denali Park. On both the northbound and southbound trains travelers can choose to ride in the standard Adventure Class, GoldStar Dome Service or the privately operated Wilderness Express dome railcars. All three options are attached to the same train or locomotive, but the amenities and cost will vary depending on what type railcar service you choose.
Train service between Anchorage and Seward is offered on the Coastal Classic route, and both Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome Service options are available. The train from Anchorage to Whittier is called the Glacier Discovery route, and just offers the Adventure Class service option. In addition to going to Whittier, the Glacier Discovery train offers day trips to Spencer Glacier and Grandview Valley.
Alaska Tour & Travel is happy to offer our guests the choice of all three levels of Alaska train service. Check out the summary of each service below and visit our Alaska Transportation page for further details on individual rail segments.
Alaska Railroad Adventure Class
Over the years the vast majority of our guests have traveled on the standard Alaska Railroad railcars known as Adventure Class, and feedback on this service continues to be great. These railcars are single level and feature comfortable seating, large picture windows and on board hosts. The train features a cafe offering 'grab and go' menu items as well as a dome observation car which is shared on a rotating basis. Since the standard railcars are single level they are generally considered to be the most stable, and also are a good choice for those in a wheelchair or with limited mobility.
GoldStar Dome Railcars
The GoldStar Dome railcars were put in service a decade ago and our guest feedback has always been fantastic. These two level railcars are operated by the Alaska Railroad and are the finest rail service available in Alaska. The cars were custom built for this run, and feature large dome windows, fine dining service and on board hosts. The GoldStar service features a confirmed seat in the upper level dome car, a special GoldStar pin, priority check-in and boarding, and a private outdoor viewing deck - the only one of its kind in the world. Also unique to the GoldStar service, enjoy all-inclusive meals with priority seating in the lower level dining room, as well as two adult beverages per trip and unlimited soft beverages. Space on the GoldStar railcars are limited, for this reason we recommend you reserve your seats early. Give us a call today!
Private Dome Railcars
If you are traveling north of Anchorage to Denali you can also choose to ride on a dome railcar operated by one of two companies. The Wilderness Express dome railcars are generally the last two cars on the Denali Star route, operating daily in both directions between Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali Park and Fairbanks. The McKinley Explorer dome railcars operate on their own train, with a slightly different schedule, with service between Anchorage, Talkeetna and Denali Park. Both options are similar to the GoldStar domes. These railcars have a spacious upper level dome seating area, bar service, and a lower level open air viewing platform. A fine dining experience is also available in the dining room downstairs for an additional fee. We typically offer some truly great rates on private domes, so check our web specials page or give us a call for details.
Don’t Forget the Bus
The Alaska Park Connection Motorcoach offers daily coach service between Anchorage and Denali Park or Seward, including connecting service between Denali Park, Anchorage and Seward. Park Connection motorcoach service to Whittier is also available on cruise ship days. Since the Parks and Seward highways travel different routes than the Alaska Railroad, an Alaska Park Connection coach ride in one direction is a logical combination with an Alaska Railroad train trip in or out of Anchorage. Over 90% of the vacation packages we arrange with the Alaska Railroad also include a Park Connection bus trip in one direction of travel.
