Overview
Visitors don't have to go far out of Anchorage to see quintessential Alaskan sights. This fully narrated tour stays within an hour's drive of the city, but treats guests to everything from glaciers to grizzlies.
Treats guests to everything from glaciers to grizzlies.
The van tour starts with pickups from many Anchorage hotels before heading south on the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm. Designated a National Scenic Byway, the two-lane road winds below mountains thousands of feet high. As the guide narrates, guests learn about the history and unique features of this stunning area.
In about an hour, the tour reaches Portage Lake where guests board a cruise to the toe of Portage Glacier. A lunch stop follows at a roadside Alaskan lodge (lunch not included). From here, the tour heads to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Many orphaned or injured animals who cannot be reintroduced into the wild have a permanent home in this expansive nature center. Guests have the opportunity to see moose, wolves, musk ox, lynx, wood bison, foxes, brown and black bears, and many other animals up close. The group starts the return to Anchorage from this point, making one final side trip to an overlook with spectacular panoramic views of the city, Cook Inlet, and Alaska Range beyond.
