Alaska Hiking Trips

Alaska's vast, varied terrain makes for some of the best hiking in the world. One day you could trek among towering mountain ranges and sloping tundra, the next along rocky coastlines. Whether you are an expert hiker or desire a shorter, more accessible experience, there are several options for exploring the great Alaskan outdoors on foot.

In Anchorage, stroll a portion of the 11-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail stretching between downtown and Kincaid Park to the southwest. The paved trail has views of Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range and is popular with all manner of outdoor enthusiasts. For panoramic scenery, drive up to the Glen Alps trailhead east of town and hike for one mile or several among mountain meadows and spruce forests. It's also possible to catch an ice hiking tour from Anchorage to Matanuska Glacier, the closest road accessible glacier to town.

There are also good opportunities for guided hikes that let you experience Alaska's dynamic landscapes and wildlife alongside a local guide. Some of the most accessible hiking trips are in Seward. A guided Exit Glacier Naturalist Hike is a great way to explore the quickly changing landscape at the toe of Exit Glacier inside Kenai Fjords National Park. The trail is moderate and the pace relaxed. More ambitious hikers should take the Ice Hiking trip onto Exit Glacier itself.

For those wanting to explore the trail-less parts of Alaska, consider a guided heli-hiking experience. There's the Denali Park Heli-Hiking trip and popular heli-hiking trip in the Knik River Valley. We also offer a unique trip from Talkeetna that utilizes a fixed wing bush plane, the memorable Ultimate Denali Hiking & Flight tour.

Denali National Park has a wealth of trails near its entrance area. Each provides a unique look into the park's history, wildlife, and topography. Stop by the main visitor center for a map and enjoy the interpretive displays before heading out on the accessible trails. The park also offers ranger-led walks at various times throughout the day.

The small community of Talkeetna is the perfect location for a scenic stroll on the Talkeetna Lakes Hike, a guided evening experience that fits in well after a busy day of activities. Or, near Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge, take a longer wilderness hike inside Denali State Park with a naturalist guide to an overlook with a perfect view of Denali when the weather is clear.

Closer to Anchorage, Alaska's popular ski resort town of Girdwood has many walking trails to explore on your own, or you can take the Alyeska Tram up to the slopes for a guided hike to Alyeska Glacier.
