Among the many gems in the mountains overlooking Anchorage is Glen Alps, a popular destination that guests on this guided walk are treated to. This is an easy hike for all ages and any time of the summer, like early on when new buds are blooming but snow still lingers in the shady spots. Or mid-summer, when the forest is flush with every shade of green. And autumn, when the hillsides blaze in yellows and reds.

The tour starts with a pickup in downtown Anchorage and 30-minute ride to the trailhead. It's an easy, well-established trail through hemlock forest and low alpine from here. Your trail guide has a knack for bringing even the most unassuming plant's story to life, and soon everyone on the hike will become attune to the flora and fauna all around them. You'll start to spot wildflowers and birds as they perch quietly on branches above. This is a thriving bear and moose habitat as well, and you might just get lucky enough to spot wildlife in the distance.
After some time walking through this beautiful setting, your short hiking tour concludes with a return ride to Anchorage.
The Chugach State Park Walking Tour covers about 2 miles with 200 feet of elevation gain. The trail includes well-established flat and incline sections, as well as rocky, rooty, and sometimes slippery areas. Trail destination may change depending on the season and conditions. Tour time includes an hour of travel and about two hours hiking.
Wear comfortable outdoor hiking clothes and sturdy hiking shoes. Bring rain gear, extra warm layers, and a hat and gloves as needed for the weather. Don't forget a camera, binoculars, and water.
This is an easy activity. The guide will tailor the group's pace so that all guests are comfortable. No experience is necessary, but it is best enjoyed by those who can walk at least two miles on uneven, rolling terrain over the course of two hours.
