Overview
For many visitors to Alaska walking on a glacier tops their 49th state bucket list. This full-day trip to the Matanuska Glacier is just the way to cross it off.
Every icy feature is a first-time discovery.
The tour conveniently picks guests up at most Anchorage area hotels before heading north into the Matanuska Valley. The trip's certified glacier guide narrates along the route, describing the area's vivid natural history. After the tiny town of Sutton the highway narrows and begins to climb. The valley walls tighten as the scenery becomes more and more dramatic, treating guests to sensational mountain views. This very valley was once carved by the Matanuska Glacier. Having receded to nearly 27 miles in length today, it takes the tour about two hours to reach the toe of the glacier.
The Matanuska Glacier is exceedingly picturesque and only gets more so when experienced up close. Crampons and trekking poles provide traction as the guide carefully leads the group onto the undulating ice. Glacial features continually shift and move. Every crevasse and blue meltwater pool and twisting ice cave is a new discovery. It's a fascinating study in glaciology and, above all, a seriously fun adventure. After about two hours on the glacier the tour winds down with lunch at a local lodge. Guests return to Anchorage about 6 PM.
