Perfect for hands-on travelers and bold families, this hiking tour invites you to experience the Denali backcountry in a whole new way. After pickups at area lodging, you'll leave the bustling Denali Canyon area on a short drive into the quiet wilderness.

From here you'll don outdoor gear appropriate for today's weather and head off trail. A bit of bushwacking through scraggly spruce and trekking over soft, uneven terrain sets the adventurous tone for the tour. Stopping along the way you'll learn key survival skills through hands-on demonstrations. At one stop you'll build a simple shelter with materials gathered from the forest. At another you'll try fire starting with a bow drill, at another tying snares.

It's a fun, educational outdoor experience complete with beautiful scenery. The tour concludes with a return to "civilization," but you'll do so knowing at least a few skills to make it in the wilderness.

More Details

The Denali Survival Tour lasts about five hours. It includes easy to moderate off-trail hiking over uneven, sometimes soft terrain. Total distance is less than two miles, with several stops along the way. Mild bushwacking is part of the adventure. Guests are encouraged to participate in survival skill demonstrations, which means you have the chance to get hands-on building a shelter, making snares, foraging, and fire building without a spark or flame. This is a family-friendly tour, kids of all ages are welcome.

What to Bring

The tour operates entirely outside and in all conditions. Dress for the weather in clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty. Bring rain gear (rain pants if you have them) and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Your guide can provide you a rain jacket if needed, trekking poles, and mosquito repellent.
