In terms of flexibility, affordability, and comfort, nothing quite beats a rental van for larger traveling groups. A four-wheel-drive van rental goes even further, adding access to more remote parts of Alaska to the list of benefits.
Access to more remote parts of Alaska.
It's a surprise to many Alaska travelers that several of the state's "highways" are little more than gravel roads. These rental vans are permitted on those unpaved routes. Journey along the far-flung Dalton Highway north of Fairbanks. Drive the Denali Highway. Visit Wrangell-St. Elias, the United States' largest national park, via the infamous McCarthy Road. All these Alaska adventures are possible.
Available vehicles are 12- or 15-passenger vans similar to a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. They are late model, low mileage, and come with free unlimited miles. All vans offer air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, and four-wheel drive.
Vehicles are authorized on any maintained dirt or gravel roads within Alaska including the Denali Highway, McCarthy Road, and Dalton Highway. Vehicles are not authorized for off-road use or river crossings.
From the South Terminal Airport Baggage Claim on Level 1, take the escalator down to the Anchorage Rental Car Center to check in for your vehicle.
