Overview
For adventurous travelers eager to take a deep dive into the Arctic Circle, this day trip tops the must-do list. The full tour includes a flightseeing trip to Coldfoot and an immersive drive with a naturalist guide on the Dalton Highway back to Fairbanks.
The adventurous ride makes the trip authentically Alaskan.
The excursion begins in the early afternoon with a one-hour flightseeing tour out of Fairbanks. The densely forested mountains that surround this northern city slowly give way to a sparser tundra laced with bogs and rivers. It's easy to spot moose from this vantage as they leave gentle wakes wading through marshy areas below. After crossing into the Arctic Circle, the flight lands at the gravel airport in Coldfoot, a tiny town with only a handful of full-time residents.
Here guests meet their Dalton Highway driving guide and climb aboard a van for an exploration of the arctic north. The road rolls through hills laced with dwarf evergreens. Guests learn that it's the permafrost that keeps those trees short and spindly. It's the first of many fascinating facts the tour guide shares as the drive continues south past defunct and active mining claims, meadows of wildflowers, and within frequent view of the Trans-Alaska pipeline. The road is rougher and landscape wilder than many guests have ever experienced, but the adventurous ride under the midnight sun makes the trip authentically Alaskan. The tour concludes in Fairbanks.
