- Knik Helicopter Glacier Dog Sled Tour
Overview
An exceptional combo of three of Alaska's top experiences, this 90-minute tour takes guests on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Cataract Glacier sled dog camp. The trip starts with a helicopter sightseeing flight into the Knik River valley. The pilot is also a guide, describing the landscape and science of Alaskan glaciers throughout the flight. The scenery changes quickly, morphing from forested mountains to empty snowfields. When guests land on the bright white glacier, they're in an entirely different world from where they started.
Excitement as the team pulls into the snowy expanse.
Iditarod mushers and a sled dog team live on the glacier in the summer. The conditions are ideal for training, especially for younger pups just starting out. The mushers give a talk about training and more, telling stories of the Iditarod and introducing guests to the team.
Soon it's time for a ride. The sled dogs catch on quickly, jumping and yipping as soon as the harnesses come out. One at a time, the musher walks the enthusiastic dogs to the line. Securely clipped in, they impatiently push into their harnesses as the full team is assembled, guests situated onto the sled, and command given to run. Suddenly it's quiet but for the rasp of sled runners as the team pulls into the snowy expanse. Once every guest has had their chance on the sled and time with the dogs, the tour concludes with a return helicopter flight.
