Overview

You may have heard about sled dogs in Alaska, but there's nothing quite like spending a bit of time with them to make you appreciate these remarkable pups. This convenient, shorter tour takes you to the home the Seavey Family, icons in the mushing world, for 90 minutes of pure sled dog joy.

The tour starts with convenient pickups in Seward before heading to the Seavey kennel just outside of town. You'll hear the cacophony of husky barks and yips before you see them. The energy is infectious. Right away you'll head out with a team of these spirited dogs hitched to a summer "sled" (wheeled cart) for a two-mile ride through the forest.

When you return to the kennel, you'll have time to spend with the dogs, including this year's newest additions, while learning about the remarkable Alaskan husky and the long tradition of mushing, hearing trail stories from the kennel's mushers, and trying on some of the gear they wear during the winter. Bit by the sled dog bug? Tune into the Ididarod come March, where many of the professional canine athletes you met will run 1,000 miles to Nome. Your tour concludes with a return to Seward.

The tour is great for all ages and most mobility levels. It also works well with other Seward activities and transportation, with the 9:00 AM tour ending in time to make an 11:30 AM Kenai Fjords tour, the 3:10 PM tour ending in time for Coastal Classic train to Anchorage, and the 6:30 PM tour starting late enough for guests arriving on the evening Park Connection.

What to Bring

Dress to be outside for about 90 minutes. Wear comfortable walking shoes. While the tour is mostly under cover, bring a rain jacket in case of wet dogs. The tour runs in all weather. Cameras are a must.

Transfers & Meeting Points

The tour departs from area hotels, the Seward Cruise Dock, and the Alaska Railroad Depot. Self-drive guests are welcome to park at the kennel.
