Overview

After busy days in the vast landscapes of Alaska, an evening hike with a naturalist guide is the ideal way to slow down and savor the area's quieter natural beauty. This tour takes visitors onto a lakeside trail just five minutes outside of the bustling little town of Talkeetna.

Slow down and savor the area's quieter natural beauty.

With 20 percent of United States waterfowl migrating north to nest in Alaska in the summer, the Talkeetna Lakes area is frequented by a diverse array of birds. Along the hike, the guide points out Belted Kingfishers, darting swallows, and even shy loons whose beautiful black and white markings camouflage them on the shimmering surface of the lake. Lucky hikers sometimes glimpse a pair of Trumpeter Swans stopping over on their way farther north. There are bigger land mammals to look for, too, with signs of bears and moose often spotted near the trail.

The guide is also deeply knowledgeable of the local plant life, plucking edible berries for their guests to taste, and discussing the medicinal qualities of trailside plants and fungi. These personalized touches make the evening hike all the more enriching. After completing the three-mile loop around the lake, the tour concludes with a drop off back in Talkeetna.
